Intensive Outpatient Program for Mental Health

Struggling with the effects of a mental health disorder on your own can be overwhelming. Choosing the right treatment to support you is important in getting the help you need to reach the treatment outcomes that help you live a fulfilling life. For some people who have not found the relief, they need with other treatment options, intensive outpatient programs for mental health are incredibly beneficial.

What is an Intensive Outpatient Program for Mental Health

Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) are designed for people struggling with mental health or substance abuse disorders. IOPs offer the support and comprehensive treatment that can be found in residential or inpatient environments, but without the immersive structure that comes with inpatient treatment. This flexibility enables clients to receive the same focused treatment while maintaining their life outside of treatment.

IOPs offer a level of manageability that enables clients to gradually ease back into the commitments of their day-to-day lives. Unlike outpatient programs that do not require the same level of intensity or commitment to treatment, intensive outpatient programs for mental health provide the same level of treatment as inpatient programs, but with more client control over scheduling and treatment protocols.

What to Expect in IOP treatment

IOP treatment uses evidence-based therapies to help people with mental health disorders begin the process of recovery from symptoms that may prevent them from living a fulfilling life. In addition to treating the underlying disorders that led to treatment, individuals are taught healthy coping skills for dealing with triggers. They also have opportunities for establishing peer support networks, learn valuable life skills, and begin to establish new helpful habits. Treatments used in intensive outpatient programs include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Holistic treatment, including meditation, acupuncture, massage, and yoga
  • Group therapy
  • Brain mapping
  • Skills training

Clients who participate in intensive outpatient programs are asked to commit to an intensive regimen of therapy, treatment, and skills training several hours per day, 3-5 times a week.

What are the Benefits of an IOP for Mental Health

In addition to the mental health benefits received from therapy, perhaps the greatest advantage of intensive outpatient programs for mental health is the ability for clients to take what they have learned in treatment and use it immediately in their day-to-day lives. Other benefits of intensive outpatient programs include:

  • Lower cost of treatment — IOPs tend to be less expensive than residential or inpatient treatment.
  • Greater control — Individuals have more flexibility in creating treatment plans and schedules, enabling them to participate in their everyday lives.
  • Ability to maintain family and work commitments — For individuals who have family commitments that prevent them from seeking inpatient treatment, IOPs enable intensive treatment without taking the individual away from work or family for long periods of time.
  • Improved Recovery Outcomes — When people participate in an intensive outpatient program for mental health they are more likely to maintain progress.
  • Peer Support — One of the components of IOPs is group therapy. In this setting clients are able to work with other people who are going on the same journey of recovery. This shared experience helps build community that provides support in and outside of the treatment environment.
  • Access to specialists — Because therapy and other treatment is provided in a clinical environment, clients have access to experienced specialists who can respond quickly to questions or concerns.
  • Greater privacy — IOPs offer greater privacy for clients who may be concerned about colleagues or family members finding out they the person is seeking treatment.
  • Life skills —  IOPs not only provide evidenced-based treatment from world class mental health disorder specialists, but they also offer a host of other holistic treatments and classes to help support you outside of treatment. These include nutrition programs, yoga classes, and sleep hygiene support.
  • Family support — IOPs enlist family and friends to help support the client during the recovery journey. Additionally, intensive outpatient programs offer services to help the family work through issues or dynamics that may hinder recovery.
